Visiting the mill

As I walked into a small mud hut in the Gondar regency of Ethiopia, I felt like I walked into a time machine that took me back 1000 years.

Standing in front of me was a big weaving mill, threads stretched across the looms going up and down.

Sitting at the end of the mill was an Ethiopian Jew with his feet in a pit, pushing pedals with his toes and throwing a spool of cotton thread back and forth, creating a beautiful soft scarf.

He did it all by eye, without measurements, with no sophisticated machines, just simple sticks, fastened together with pieces of worn out rags to create looms.

The promise

One of the men came up to me with a prayer shawl, he gave it to me and said, "God promised that He will bring us home to Jerusalem, and we have no doubt that God will fulfill his promise. If you want to make an effort to help, please wear this Talit when you pray for us, please think about us, have us in your heart, and that will help us finally come back home to Israel".

A little background

The reason why so many Ethiopian Jews work in the weaving trade is that for the past 2,000 years the Jews in Ethiopia have been persecuted, their lands were taken away from them and they’ve always been on the run.

Because of this persecution, they have picked up trades such us weaving, carpentry and metalwork, which are trades that don’t require land.

The promise

When I left Ethiopia to go back to Israel, I promised them that I would do everything I can to bring them home to Israel.
We have decided to help support the Ethiopian Jews by selling their products. All proceeds will go toward this cause.
Thank you for supporting the last Jews of Ethiopia!

Your order will be shipped from Israel.
